Amy Speace is an American singer-songwriter from Baltimore, Maryland, who is a former Shakespearean actress notable for her critically acclaimed music. National Public Radio described her voice as "velvety and achy" and compared her to Lucinda Williams. The singer was based in Jersey City, N.J. but has moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Her music is receiving positive critical attention. Speace's song, "Weight Of The World", has been covered by singer Judy Collins on her 2010 album "Paradise". In 2012, she supported Alejandro Escovedo on his UK tour in June and July. Amy Speace graduated from Amherst College, then moved to Manhattan to study acting. She toured with The National Shakespeare Company for a few years. After a break-up, she bought a cheap guitar at a pawn shop and wrote several song as a way of dealing her troubles. An appearance at an open mic led to a regular gigs at The Bitter End and the Living Room, which led to an independent release of her first songs. In 2005, a chance encounter with Judy Collins' manager changed her life. After catching Amy's set at a music conference, the manager brought a rough demo to her boss' attention and Collins was struck by her writing and her voice. "Amy Speace has the total package," she said. "I am a total fan." Judy Collins signed Amy to her own Wildflower Records label in 2006, releasing "Songs for Bright Street", which included a duet with Jayhawks' Gary Louris. "The Killer In Me" followed in 2009, with a rare duet appearance by Ian “Mott the Hoople” Hunter, who brought Amy as his support to the UK for her first tour outside the US. NPR named the title track from Killer “Song of the Day” and wrote “her velvety, achy voice recalls an early Lucinda Williams.” USA TODAY called Amy "a rising star." And in 2010, John Platt of NYC's premiere AAA radio station WFUV named Amy's song “The Weight of the World” as #4 in Top 10 list of the “Best Folk Songs of the Decade,” a song that Judy Collins herself would record and call “one of the best songs I've ever heard”.
